Changes to Haws Drinking Fountain Valves
A few years ago Haws discontinued their 5871 Valve and replaced that with the 5872.  Last year Haws replaced the 5872 with their 5874 series valves.  While repair kits are still available for the 5872 (VRK-5872) the whole valve is no longer available.

When it comes to changing out old 5872 valves you need to know which 5874 valve will fit on your fountain.
The Haws 5874PB is for fountains with a recessed push button.
The Haws 5874PBF is for fountains with a flush-mounted style push button.

Pacific Plumbing Newsletter, May 2013

On December 16,2010, Congress approved Act S.3874.  The purpose of this Act was to introduce amendments regarding lead reduction in drinking water to Section 1417 of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

This Act has allowed time for manufacturers to prepare for what was going to be a monumental change in how they made faucets.  California and Vermont were the first to start this movement having both voted lead reductions into law in January 2010, Maryland followed in 2012 and Louisiana in 2013.  However the Act goes into effect for the Nation on January 4th, 2014.

What does this mean for the consumer?

For a while this law was confusing as manufacturers had 2 lines of faucets, regular, and lead-free versions.  There were also exemptions to the law that made it very confusing both to the vendor and to the consumer.  Luckily most manufacturers have decided to drop the confusion and do what was best and easiest for the customer.

By the end of the 1st quarter of 2013, major faucet manufacturers like Chicago Faucets and Zurn have done away with their old leaded product lines.  They are only selling the lead-free versions.  Chicago will keep the AB on their part numbers to keep the lead free distinction while Zurn has added the -XL to let their customers know they are lead free.  T&S Brass just kept their part numbers the same when they switched out their line while Fisher created completely new part numbers for their products to denote the lead free versions.

While there is still half a year left until the law is completely in effect by completely switching over their faucet lines manufacturers were able to lower their overhead by not having to buy two different types of lead, thus reducing the price difference between the two lines of faucets.  Thankfully now the confusion is over and everyone everywhere can enjoy lead free drinking water.

Pacific Plumbing Newsletter, April 2013

Usually when the talk comes around to electronic faucets and flush valves for the restrooms the first thing that comes to mind is price.  With budgets as tight as they are, the thought of a faucet that is 3x as expensive as the manual versions makes little sense, however those days have passed.

When electronic valves first came onto the market they were extremely expensive and constantly breaking down.  Those days are long gone. Today’s generation of electronic valves work better than their predecessors and with an array of accessories such as hydro-generators that provide up to 10+ years of battery life.

Some sensor faucet manufacturers (Zurn) have built in guards against potential floods that automatically shut off the stream after 30 seconds even if an object is in the sensor detection area.

Sensor faucets are easy to install and come in a variety of power options: battery-operated, hardwired, or plug-in.

Electronic flush valves have also improved from their early models with better separation between the electronics and the water flow as well as having options that allow for dual flushing cycles for solids or liquids.

One of the best features of the new sensor valves is the built in courtesy flush option.  This helps with restroom sanitation by automatically flushing if the unit hasn’t been used in 24 hours.  The automatic flushing keeps your restrooms smelling fresh as you’re not longer relying on the user to flush as they sometimes tend to not flush for various reasons.

Sensor faucets and flushometers no longer are the expensive atrocities of their earlier models, instead they’ve become affordable ways to increase restroom sanitation and efficiency while helping water conservation as the automatic shutoffs keep customers from being able to leave the water running.

New Product: Chicago Faucet SSPS

The Self Sustaining Power System from Chicago Faucets is a new, energy efficient way to power our line of high performance electronic faucets. SSPS uses the simple flow of
water to create and store power.  With SSPS, there’s no need to replace batteries or wire
the faucet to the building’s power supply.  SSPS, coupled with Chicago Faucets’ lowpower-consumption HyTronic® and E-Tronic® 40 faucets, provides years of worry-free performance.

The SSPS is sold in combination with HyTronic® and E-Tronic® 40 faucets from Chicago Faucets.  Lavatory, gooseneck, deck mount, and wall mount configurations are available.  Retrofit kits are also available, including everything you need to convert your existing AC or DC powered HyTronic and E-Tronic 40 faucets to SSPS units. In addition to single supply versions, Chicago Faucets offers SSPS models for dual supply applications that include either mechanical or thermostatic ASSE 1070 point-of-use mixers.

  • SSPS works reliably even when the faucet is only used intermittently. Buildings where occupancy fluctuates widely – such as stadiums, schools, and offices – are not a challenge for SSPS. Even after long periods without use, the unit is guaranteed to activate and generate power.n
  • All units come with a 1.0 gpm outlet pre-installed. An included 0.5 gpm insert can be installed in the field for even greater water savings.
  • Unlike competitive units, SSPS does not require a backup battery. The highly efficient storage battery retains power through long periods without use.
  • Compact, elegant housing installs easily, even in tight spaces.
  • Compatible with the most reliable electronic faucets in the industry: HyTronic and E-Tronic 40 Series faucets from Chicago Faucets.
  • SSPS meets low-lead and NSF 61 requirements for safe drinking water.
  • Provides 10+ years of battery life with no minimum or maximum usage per day.
  • Power supply carries an industry-leading, 5-year warranty.

Updated Website

Here at Pacific Plumbing we’re never satisfied with “good enough” and keep striving to make our website better for our customers.  We’re working towards keeping the website as an online catalog filled with parts breakdowns and plenty of information to help you figure out what’s wrong, but we’re adding the ability to order the parts you need at that instant.

While we’ve kept the look pretty much the same we’re constantly changing the back end to allow us to add more information to products (such as installation videos) as well as creating a Customer Account area that will allow you to access your old online orders to see your order history.

Another important feature of this website is this blog, which will allow us to help you better understand the changes and use the features we’ve added for you.  This blog will also detail new product releases as well as any important laws or information that comes out affecting the plumbing industry.

So take a look around the new website and feel free to leave us a comment if there is anything we can help with.
